Client Spotlight: Latoya Baltimore, Woman of Essence Beauty Parlor

About the Business
Woman of Essence Beauty Parlor opened its doors on May 26, 2018. We’re a multicultural, full-service salon in Cambridge, MD dedicated to meeting each client’s individual beauty needs. Our services include—but aren’t limited to—eyelash installation, facial and body waxing, nails and pedicures, haircuts, hair styling, braiding, and weaves. We also retail high-quality haircare products from Influence for clients to use at home.

While hair services have always been central to our offerings, eyelash installation has become one of our most in-demand services—it’s truly helped my business thrive. Eyelashes have evolved into an essential part of many women’s beauty routines, and I’m proud to provide that boost of confidence through my work.

I absolutely love what I do. What once was just a dream is now my reality—a dream come true. It’s incredibly fulfilling to put my passion and skill to work every day. The joy I feel when clients leave satisfied and glowing is unmatched. This salon was God-ordained, and He has shown me so much favor over the past seven years. I look forward to many more.

How It All Began
Years before launching my business, I reached out to the SBA and connected with Maryland Capital Enterprises’ (MCE)Women’s Business Center (WBC) Director, Lisa Twilley. I explained my vision, and she gave me a business plan template to get started. From there, I spent several years planning, prioritizing, and getting everything in order before officially opening.

Looking Ahead: Business Goals
Long term, I plan to expand the services at Woman of Essence Beauty Parlor. I’d love to add offerings like microblading, Brazilian waxing, and professional facials. I also have plans to open a second location in the future.

How MCE and the WBC Helped Me
MCE has helped my business in ways I can’t even measure. From the beginning, they provided the resources I needed to get started—including funding. The Women’s Business Center meetings were especially inspiring. I connected with other women—some already in business and others just starting out—and those relationships gave me valuable insights into how to better structure and grow my own business.

MCE continues to play a vital role in my business journey. Anytime I have a question or concern, I know I can reach out to Lisa Twilley, and she’ll point me in the right direction.

Words of Advice for New Entrepreneurs
If you’re thinking about starting a business, reach out to MCE. They’ll equip you with the information and support you need. Take your time—there’s no rush when you’re building something meaningful. Plan ahead by saving toward your financial goals so you don’t have to rely entirely on large loans—but if funding is needed, MCE can help with that too.

Most importantly, write down your vision. As Habakkuk 2:2 says, “Write the vision and make it plain.” Your goals should be clear, intentional, and inspired. Putting your dreams—especially the ones God has placed in your heart—on paper helps turn them into a plan. And that plan becomes your guide.
