Meet Tamika Broughton – Our October Client Spotlight Feature
Tell me about your business. What is your top-selling product or service, who is your target market, how long have you been in business, and what’s your favorite thing about your business or clients?
Broughton Food Safety offers food safety training courses and consulting services to businesses of all sizes involved in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, holding, and distribution of food for human consumption. We also cater to restaurants, retail establishments, and food entrepreneurs. Our goal is to ensure that these businesses comply with federal and state regulations.
Our top-selling service is the Food Safety Preventive Control Alliance (FSPCA) Preventive Controls for Human Food Part 2. This instructor-led online course certifies individuals as Preventive Control Qualified Individuals (PCQI), ensuring that businesses involved in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, and holding of food comply with FDA regulations.
Our target market includes food production and manufacturing companies, food service establishments, retail food stores, the hospitality industry, delivery services, government agencies, and individual learners.
This year marks our third year in business. My favorite part about the business is my clients. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with people from various businesses and countries—some of whom I never imagined I’d have the chance to instruct. It’s always rewarding to learn about their practices and see where I can help.
How did you get started in your business?
While working in the food industry, I noticed a lack of comprehensive food safety training. Our practices typically involved annual training sessions that addressed issues as they came up and aimed to pass audits. However, I strongly believe food safety should be at the forefront of daily operations. That realization inspired me to start a business that provides accessible, impactful food safety training, both online and in person.
What are some of your long-term goals for your business?
My long-term goals are to contribute to improving global food safety and to help small businesses create a culture of food safety.
How has MCE and/or the Women’s Business Center helped you?
I’ve gained invaluable knowledge about business through the free courses and workshops offered by MCE and the Women’s Business Center. Although I didn’t have a business background initially, I’ve learned a great deal. At first, it was overwhelming—almost like learning a completely new subject. But meeting the staff at MCE and the Women’s Business Center made a big difference. They connected me with people who helped with marketing and offered advice on talking to financial institutions.
